JL
took me through
Quebec
on the Harley to celebrate my upcoming birthday. The
countryside was coming alive for spring. Such a romantic
get away. Can’t help but get excited every time I hear the
roar of a bike. So many adventures! We did freeze
though! But we laughed the entire
trip!

There really are four trailers in rural
Virginia that hold tons of
vintage, never been used before beads and miles of chain. I got to visit my beading
family in May. Drove down, slept in my car, looked
through box after box for wonderful chain and drove back all
in four days. I WAS TREATED LIKE ROYALTY…even got the
royal bed. I am so lucky. I look forward to more
tomatoes, seeing my new far away pet Casey, and visiting with
the family of John and Kathy. THANK YOU FOR MAKING MY
BUSINESS SUCH A
SUCCESS!

I found this in my files and
thought I would post it on my website. It has been one
year now since becoming a Canadian Citizen. I am very
proud of it! I started making jewellery during this time of my
life while painting. My life has changed a lot many
times during my 47 years. It is nice to have time
captured on paper so you can see how far you have
evolved. Enjoy the read. I was applying for my MFA
at UW when I wrote this...I did not make the cut. gay

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
2002 About three years ago, I married a Canadian from a
computer matching service. Reminiscent of the old west’s mail
order brides taking the stage coast out west to settle the
open prairie, I was ready to relocate. I thought moving to
Canada would be as difficult as moving from Houston to New
York; one would just call up the movers and move. Somehow the
border never crossed my mind. I had so much to learn and many,
many forms to fill out.
For the first year, as an
applied immigrant I could not work. This came as a big shock.
I had always worked. I used the time to drive the countryside
of the Waterloo Region to learn the back roads and small
towns. It was so much prettier than Texas and I found the
Mennonites charming. My husband started thinking I was a
Mennonite stalker always ready to go for a “drive-by”.
I quickly got accustomed to the snow, the new currency
and a new life. I found I loved the newspapers, CBC and my new
friends. I would tag along on my husband’s early commuter
drive into Toronto and spend the days walking through museums,
learning the subway and shopping. I soaked up the diverse
culture and was so proud to bump into an American and tell
them great things about Canada.
I decided to return to
what I had enjoyed the most – school – to get a doctorate so I
could teach. Watching Oprah and her rah rah about ‘find your
passion and you will succeed’ made my next life adventure seem
effortless. I applied to several universities but was lacking
a needed portfolio. My years of creating ceramics had been
scattered to friends, family and tag sale pickers for the
move, making creating a catalogue from objects now lost was
impossible.
Starting from scratch in ceramics was
impractical, but I was determined to have something to show. I
started to work in the only medium that I could fit into our
tiny condo – painting. Now, I had painted before but only
stuff – furniture, flower pots, ceramics, miles of interior
walls in homes throughout the years and even a swimming pool
slide, but only a couple of times had I conquered a
canvas.
I bought the largest foam core pieces I could
jiggle into my car, tons of paint and got to work. Sitting on
the cold concrete floor in the tiny basement laundry room,
using the washer and dryer as my easel and balancing the
boards on my knees to paint. I given myself the time to create
and the paintings turned out colourful and cheery. With
sometime, I had a new portfolio, a new passion and a new way
to express myself. I even got into the One-of-a-Kind Show in
Toronto with my new artworks.
I did get into the
doctorial program of my choice but my two sons where so
entrenched in their new Canadian life that they revolted,
demanding to stay. Sometimes life is all about staying in one
place. Sometimes staying opens bigger doors than moving, as I
found, Texas is not the only place to have big dreams and big
ideas. I still say, “ya’ll” but I have also caught myself
saying, “eh?”. Canada is feeling mighty homey right about
now.
